Solid Waste and Moderate Risk Waste Management PlanThe Town of Friday Harbor would like to announce the beginning of its Solid Waste and Moderate Risk Waste Management Plan process. All solid waste systems in Washington must operate according to an approved solid waste plan. In lieu of the Town’s participation in the San Juan County (County) Plan, the Town has decided to prepare its own Plan and have the County include the Town Plan as an appendix. The Plan is a guide and implementation tool for decision makers, businesses and residents within the Town for managing waste for the next 20-year period, with periodic review and updates as required. The Town of Friday Harbor Solid Waste and Moderate Risk Waste Management Plan is being prepared to reflect the Town’s solid waste and moderate risk waste management programs and policies. Items ranging from collection, to materials that can be recycled or require special handling, to educational workshops must be included in the Plan. The Town encourages the involvement of citizens in the planning process and wants to ensure coordination between our community and other jurisdictions. The Town is establishing its public participation process through the Town Council and Planning Commission, which will serve as the Town’s Solid Waste Advisory Committee. Information and draft elements of the Plan will be made available at here or by emailing amyt@fridayharbor.org . As draft elements of the Plan are provided, the Town will begin to engage the public for comments and recommendations through regular public meetings. These meetings will be advertised and the public is encouraged to attend and participate in the discussions. The information being discussed at the meeting will be available via the Town Website (see above) well in advance of the meeting date. Written comments or recommendations about elements of the draft Plan may be submitted to the Town at anytime. Following review of recommendations by the public and necessary revisions, the Plan will be forwarded to the State for technical review prior to adoption by the Town Council. Overall, this process is estimated to take 1 year to complete. This is a brief overview of a rather long and complex process. A Public Participation Plan will be made available here for details and opportunities to participate. For questions, please contact the Town. Thank you.
