Planning
Planning is under the umbrella of the Community Development Department.
Long-Range Planning
Our long-range planning document is the Town of Friday Harbor's Comprehensive Plan (Comp Plan). The Comp Plan is amended annually to reflect text changes to the Six-Year Transportation Improvement Program and the Summary of Capital Facilities Improvements. Amendments to the Comp Plan may also include requests for reclassification. Reclassification applications are accepted once a year and due by December 31.

Current Planning
The intent of current planning is to effectively carry out the advancement of long-range planning through the land use and and building permit application processes.
In some instances, development applications may require formal procedures such as comment periods, public notice to property owners surrounding the proposed project site, a public hearing before the Town Planning Commission and/or Town Council, etc.
Examples of these actions include but are not limited to: Rezones, Conditional Use Permits, Shoreline Substantial Development Permits, Vacation, and Planned Residential Developments.
In other instances, some applications may be administratively reviewed by staff. Examples include but are are not limited to: Sign Permit Applications, Site Plan Review, Short Subdivisions, and Boundary Line Adjustments.
